Holding Fear, Honouring Hope: From Professional Anxiety to Agency in the AI Era

As artificial intelligence rapidly integrates into education, offering personalized feedback, tutoring, grading, and even emotional support, many educators find themselves quietly asking a deeply personal question: Am I becoming replaceable? This talk explores the growing undercurrent of fear among teachers, lecturers, and facilitators facing what feels like an identity crisis. In staff rooms and professional forums, the unspoken question lingers: If AI can do the tasks I was trained to do, what is left for me? Beyond discussions of efficiency or innovation, this is a psychological and existential dilemma. As AI handles routine and even some emotional tasks, it throws our irreplaceable human capacities into sharp relief. The question isn't whether we'll be replaced, it's whether we'll embrace what makes us irreplaceable. People are turning to AI for emotional support, so it may seem hard to argue that human connection is education's core. The key difference lies in education's fundamentally collective purpose. While AI provides transactional, individual support, educational relationships are about collective meaning-making, contextual learning communities, and developmental relationships that unfold over time. An AI can help process test anxiety, but it can't create the classroom culture where students feel brave enough to ask questions that change everyone's understanding. Using Critical Hope Theory, which honours our discomfort while demanding action, this talk shows how educator anxiety can become a catalyst for professional renewal. Critical hope allows us to mourn the loss of old roles while cultivating new ones, asking not only "What is AI doing?" but "What do I want to do more of now that AI can assist me?" Ultimately, educator anxiety about AI is a mirror of our values. By tending to that anxiety with honesty and hope, we can build new visions of teaching that are both human and future-facing. AI might help with individual needs, but education has always been about something bigger: becoming human together.
